Japanese Ver. “You’re Beautiful” Receives Negative Response

It was revealed back in May that TBS would be remaking the popular Korean drama “You’re Beautiful”,Japan version 'Ikemen Desu Ke?" the anticipation was extremely high since the original drama has been receiving much love in Japan. Yet it appears that audience was rather disappointed after the first episode aired on July 15th.

Since the story remains the same, viewers were expecting actors to be as beautiful as the original Korean cast. However, criticism from fans came right after the Japanese cast was revealed. Boy group Kis-My-Ft2’sTamamori plays the role originally portrayed by actor Jang Geun Suk; while Fujigaya and Yaotome play the roles of the rest of the A.N.JELL members. Netizens commented, “They are not beautiful at all”, “Is this the horror version of the drama? Don’t we have any better actors in Japan?”, “We are ruining the Korean one.”

After its pilot episode on July 15th, fans were not only disappointed at the cast, but also with the story and the scenes. It seems like the fans were expecting at least some originality in the Japanese one, but what they saw was exactly the same as the Korean version. Viewers felt the creativity in the remake was lacking.

Which manga was best adapted into a live action drama?

It has become a recent trend within the past couple of years for popular manga series to be adapted into a live action drama. Manga series have rich story lines, but because most fans have strong impressions of the manga they commonly are disappointed with the result of a live action adaptation. Of course there’s many exceptions to this and ORICON STYLE polled 1,000 people and asked the question, “Which manga was best adapted into a live action drama?”

Popular music manga, ‘Nodame Cantabile‘ starring Ueno Juri and Tamaki Hiroshi ranked number one in the poll. The comical essence of the drama on top of the real orchestra performances was more than people expected.

‘Nodame Cantabile’ is a manga written by Ninomiya Tomoko, and follows the story of a strange yet very talented pianist named “Nodame” as well as the people she associates with in this musical comedy. A poll taker commented, “The acting of the cast members playing these unique characters perfectly matched” proving that the exquisite casting did justice even to a fan of the original manga. However, the performance scenes, which the cast learned and practiced for, was the main thing that impressed everyone. What could not be brought to life in the manga was made a reality through the drama series bringing out the music within the story. Nodame Cantabile brought about the “classical music boom” and changed the impression and stereotype of classical music.

The second manga chosen by fans was the teen love story of ’Hana Yori Dango‘ by Kamio Yok. The manga itself is very popular internationally and has been adapted into a drama even in the neighboring country of South Korea. In the Japanese adaptation Inoue Mao plays the character of Makino Tsukushi, a strong willed and sturdy young girl, and Arashi’s Matsumoto Jun plays the character ofDomyouji Tsukasa, a high and mighty heir to a major corporation. The chemistry between the duo was brilliantly brought to life just like it is in the manga. A poll taker remarks, “There were parts that were slightly different from the manga, but as a drama it was very amusing“. After it’s airtime in 2005, the series came back with a sequel and even released a movie.

The medical history manga series that sold 6,800,000 copies in total, ‘JIN‘, ranked in third place. JIN follows the story of Dr. Minakata Jin, played by Osawa Takao, who goes back to a time where medical practices were not highly advanced and learns the preciousness of life. This year in May it won the “15th Tezuka Osamu Bunka-sho Manga-sho” and has also received much praise. The realistic surgery scenes and the historical being incorporated into the story “made it exciting to watch the following week.” The series, loved by both men and women, finished it’s final episode with an average viewership rating of 26.1% and was praised with satisfaction.

When it comes to manga series being adapted into live action dramas, fans become very strict and critical. Although the popularity of the manga could mean it’ll become a hot topic, but it could also mean that with one mistake the drama will be referred to as a bad drama. In the midst of that pressure, the top 10 dramas below have been adapted well enough to receive the approval of many fans and may even be considered “masterpieces”. With this increasing trend in bringing manga characters to life, it will be exciting to see which character will be next to appear on the television screen in live action.

SUPER JUNIOR - Promoting Korea to 6 Billion People with 10 Voices

Korean pop culture’s fever that started in the end of 1990s in Southeast Asia has now gone beyond Asia and is spreading in Europe. So many news media including newspaper and internet news articles are reporting about Hallyu announcing the enhanced status of Korea. We found out about proud men of Korea, Super Junior who was recently called a moving enterprise and is setting records at every moment.

Since before the debut, Super Junior received a lot of attention for having the most number of people in a group. With their perfect choreography, they captivated the public’s eye and they are garnering attention for their future moves. The word “celebrity” (yunyaein) using the Chinese characters演 display yun, 藝 talent yae, and人 person means a person who displays his or her talent. Just like how the word means, they are celebrities. The word “celebrity” includes singers and dancers and Super Junior satisfies all of those categories. Recently, their fourth album title track “Miinah” which was released last year set a new record when the song stayed at number one for 54 weeks on Taiwan’s biggest online music site KKBOX’s Korean Japanese music Top 100 weekly chart. They showed off their power by becoming the first artist ever in the history of Taiwan’s music chart to be number 1 for a year and setting a new record for staying on number one for the longest time. They broke their own record of being number one for a total of 36 weeks with their third album title track “Sorry Sorry.” They cannot have set an amazing record simply because of their music. What are their appeals?

Enchanting people’s hearing.
The group had various unit activities such as Super Junior M which targets Chinese speaking countries, Super Junior K.R.Y. which shows its diverse emotions through musical and drama OST, and Super Junior Happy who sings Super Junior’s unique, cheerful and fun music. They worked hard as singers continuing to try various types of music. They received some criticisms that they only sing hook songs that people can remember easily with its repetitive melody and simple lyrics. However, in an album that usually contains over 10 songs, there are only few hook songs. There are many high quality songs that definitively show their development. But because the response on hook songs is great, they rank high on online music charts and receive more press. Moreover, nowadays when things change fast and people get sick of things easily, the music industry’s main source of income has become mp3. Thus, the management companies are reluctant to release albums which will end up in financial loss and the companies end up using hook songs as title tracks to gain popularity easily. Although it’s the trend in the music industry that mp3s equal financial gain, Super Junior accomplished an achievement of being number seven on the world album chart with their fourth album Miinah. The album ranked higher than the albums from world pop stars such as Usher, Black Eyed Peas, and Ke$ha. Also, even though the group did not hold any promotional activity in Japan, their first single album became number two on the Oricon weekly chart, breaking the record in having the highest album sales for a debut single in Japan. England’s BBC praised highly of Super Junior who stands tall as the main characters of Hallyu K-pop dubbing them a Korean brand that will replace Samsung.

Captivating people’s sight.
Nowadays, there is no clear distinction between singers and actors that one can see singers in movies, dramas, and on TV. In Super Junior, there is a member who stands next to actors with his looks and acting skills that are comparable to any other actor’s. Siwon debuted as an actor before becoming a singer in 2005 with Eighteen Twenty-nine. In 2007, he was chosen as the lead alongside Andy Lau in Battle of Wits. Recently, he played a new elite agent Kim Junho in Athena: The Goddess of War leaving short yet strong impression with viewers. People were able to confirm his potentials. There are also Kibum, Donghae, and Heechul who appeared on TV showing diverse characters. As a group who has great looks, the movie The Attack on the Pin-up boys was released with Super Junior as the lead. Also, Super Show 3D movie was exported mesmerizing audience with their performance and choreography.

Satisfying five senses.
Super Junior who faithfully worked as celebrities to satisfy viewers’ demands. Their advancement in variety programs is amazing where they can show their skills as celebrities. Wherever they go, they make viewers happy by either become supporting actors, MCs or guests. Teuk Academy comprised of Leeteuk, Eunhyuk, and Shindong especially present laughter and are willing to look funny. Compared to other celebrities who only appear in commercials and sometimes come out on talk shows resisting looking funny, Super Junior approaches their fans with friendliness. Even though they are being underestimated on their achievements in music due to their talents as TV show personalities being emphasized, they are a group that the world market takes notices of and are being dubbed a moving brand and a moving medium sized enterprise. They try a new genre each time and give diverse spectacles that the public can look at. They want to communicate with their fans and try to make contact with the public on TV, stage and with their personal space such as SNS.

Super Junior is a Korean male idol group comprised of 13 members who are managed by SM Entertainment. Excluding Hangeng who is involved in a lawsuit, Kangin who is in the army, and Kim Kibum who is focusing on his acting, they are currently working as a 10 member group. They are enhancing the nation’s prestige and are promoting Korea in other countries, but their work is still fruitless. We look forward to them going beyond the idea of a group to becoming the national brand to return home in glory in the future.

Pop sensation Jang Geun Suk is projected to make more than 40 billion won (38 million USD) in revenues from Japan this year, which would make him one of the most profitable Korean celebrities since Bae Yong Joon.

Jang Geun Suk has become the first ever Korean celebrity to land on the front cover of a famous Japanese magazine named “MEN’S NONNO“!

The actor recently modeled five different outfits for his first photoshoot with the magazine and earned the praise of Japanese staff for his ability to exude an infinite amount of charms. With his youthful energy, he was said to have perfected looks ranging from pretty boy to powerful and masculine.

One staff commented, “He has a surprising amount of focus. Even while dancing to his favorite songs while on break, he’ll go right into the poses the photographer asks of him once filming starts. We were all captivated with the way he paid attention to every single staff on set, and we were able to see how genuine and hard working he was by the way he was trying his best to pick up the atmosphere.”

Romance in the air: Kpop Celebrity Romance

This past week KARA and BEAST fandom were in complete disarray (or harmony?) as Goo Hara and Yong Jun Hyung from the respective groups were found to be in a secret relationship for a little over a month now.

On June 28th, shortly after paparazzi photos of the two dating at a local park surfaced on the Web, BEAST’s Cube Entertainment made an official statement saying, “The two have been close as a sunbae/hoobae (senior/junior), and it’s been about a month since they’ve begun dating. Yong Jun Hyung comforted Hara when she was going through difficult times earlier this year with her management contract dispute. Because of their respective busy schedules, they’ve only hung out three times so far.”

KARA’s management agency, DSP Media, made a follow-up statement saying, “They share good mutual feelings toward each other, but they’re still in the midst of getting to know one another. It’s been only about a month so far, so please give them some time and look after them some more.”

According to reports by local media, Goo Hara and Yong Jun Hyung were first caught dating on June 9th, the day BEAST returned from their concert in Japan. They were spotted again on June 12th and 13th sparking speculation about their true relationship. And finally two weeks later, both parties went public and admitted their affection for each other. The two say it’s only been a month now so we’ll have to see how this relationship actually pans out in the future. But much kudos to Hara and Jun Hyung for being true to themselves and going public with their romance, which is often very difficult for celebrities.

When this news first broke out, it honestly brought to mind the recently split up couple of actress Shin Sae Kyung and SHINee’s Jong Hyun. In eerily similar fashion, the two adorable young stars were found secretly dating last year after local press unveiled paparazzi photos of them together. At the time, the ex-couple had said each other was their “most ideal type,” shocking the whole world as idol stars don’t usually come out in public with real-life relationships. However, after less than a year (and relentless rumors on the truth about their relationship), the two called it off reasoning their respective busy schedules.

And just a few days ago, another rumor of an idol couple started spreading between 4minute’s Hyun Ah andMBLAQ’s Lee Joon. Multiple reports of the two looking close and having a good time on the flight back to Korea were seen, to the point where Hyun Ah’s management agency had to officially come out and deny the rumor. However, the two stars have made several questionable remarks of each other in the past hinting at a possible relationship in the making, so it remains to be seen what the truth is behind the two.

Nonetheless, last week was a hot week filled with news and rumors of celebrity dating gossips. Fans have shown conflicting reactions to the news as some were upset while some expressed their appreciation for the celebrities’ honesty.

Let’s Talk: What did you think of the recent celebrity romance? Which ones have you followed? Do you love them or hate them? What other celebrity couple did you like? Why do you think we are so intrigued?

But Kim Joon unexpectedly got the call from Korean military and decided to join police forces in the second half of this year.”

He went on to inform "Kim Jae Wook wishes to have a quiet enlistment and the agency would not be disclosing the venue and time." However I bet the late news would not stop ardent fans from finding enough information to give him a send-off!

Kim Jae Wook recently starred in the musical "Hedwig" as a transgender singer "Hedwig". He left the team on June 19 to prepare for his impending enlistment. This was his first attempt at a musical but model-turned-actor Kim Jae Wook took to the stage with fine acting and sang with explosive power, winning acclaims that he’s in control of the stage.

Kim Jae Wook debuted as an actor through the 2007 popular MBC drama "The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince" in which viewers fondly remembers him as the waffle guy. He also took leading roles in SBS drama "Bad Guy", KBS dramas "The Kingdom of the Winds", "Dalja’s Spring" and "Marry Me, Mary", of course not forgetting the monster-gay baker in the movie "Antique Bakery".

Let’s wish Kim Jae Wook all the best and await his return in two years’ time!

I almost think this is the best time to leave society. The celebrity world is a place where if you don’t pay attention at all times, you can ruin yourself. I think I have been losing a lot of important and sacred things as I continued living in that world.
While I’m in the army, I will slowly look back on my 20’s. The mind that might have been rotting without me knowing, I will come back more awakened with that mind. I will see you two years later as a healthy person. Everyone stay healthy.”
Netizens commented, “The short cut suits him”, “Be careful and come back soon!”, “I will wait for you”.

Eye for Eye, Tooth for Tooth and EVIL for EVIL - Code Breakers

HELLO!!! it's time for me to introduce another Shounen manga. Is a manga created by mangaka Akimine Kamijyo running in Weekly Shōnen Magazine through Kodansha. It tells the story of a high-school girl who is trained in martial arts and a new transfer student, a boy with mysterious powers. Oh not forgot to mention this guy ogami he pretty cool and when you read more you will think he become more handsome, cool and interesting guy.

I am a huge fan of "Shounen" mangas with fighting and action. Code Breaker has a variety of fighting styles, from guns to swords to super-sonic waves, and of course fire! Oogami's ability of using fire is best worded as "bad-ass"! And it only gets better as the series goes on! But what I also like to see is some comedy, drama and even a bit of romance. Code Breaker gives you all of those. There are many hilarious parts in this story that crack me up and keep the story uplifting and entertaining! There are also, as I said, some romance parts. Don't let that turn you away from the story though, this isn't at all a "shoujo" sort of story where it's a constant love-battle and random hand-holding scenes. However, there are occasionally some hints of 'love interest' between characters that give the story a bit more of a plot.

If you enjoy some of those mainstream mangas like Bleach, Naruto & Fairy Tail then I can almost guarantee that you will like Code Breaker! It is sad that Code Breaker isn't among the most popular mangas, because I think it deserves to be up there.

Lets see some preview on synopsis and manga picture from the series.....

Synopsis

Riding the bus one day, Sakurakouji Sakura looks out the window to see people being burned alive with a blue fire and a boy her age who's unharmed and standing over the people. She comes back to the site the next day and there are no corpses or evidence of any kind of murder, just a small fire. She then goes to class to find there's a new transfer student, Oogami Rei, who looks exactly like the boy she saw before and wears a black glove only on his left hand. Oogami is a Code Breaker, one who "does not exist". He is a seemingly cold-blooded killer who follows the principle of "an eye for an eye", to "use evil against evil". Convinced that killing is not right, Sakurakouji sets out to stop him and penetrate his icy heart.

Code: Breakers
A top secret organization involved in the killing of evils who the law cannot bring to justice. There are only six in existence at any time. The code numbers does not necessarily indicate their strength, but indicate the time when they started working for Eden. However, Code: Breaker 01, also known as the Ace, is typically the strongest of the six. Each Code: Breaker adds their own addition to the Code of Hammurabi. Their abilities operate on a limited capacity and will have adverse effects on the body if overused, resulting in a loss of their powers for 24 hours, also called "lost form". It is later revealed that Code: Breaker will eventually die from their own powers. Aside from the Ace, all the current Code: Breakers have been revealed. Code: Breaker who are extraordinarily strong are given code names instead of code numbers.

Main Character

Sakura Sakurakouji.
The main character, Sakura, is thought of as cute and helpless by boys who think they should protect her. However, she's actually a martial arts expert and turns down guys who ask her out based on their protective feelings because they don't know the real her. The story is told from Sakura's perspective, but her influence on the plot is bare minimal (despite her efforts).Prior to the storyline, she found an old dog whose homeless owner had died a few months before the start of the story. She attempts to befriend the dog whom she promptly names "Dog". Her attempts are fruitless until Ogami comes. She is immune to Rei's fire and cannot be burned for reasons unknown which strongly draws the interest of the Code: Breaker organization leading her to be dubbed as a "Rare Kind". Later through the story she is able to dispel other Code: Breakers' abilities, leading one to believe that her ability is that she negates the abilities of others. Together with her fighting skills, this makes Sakura a formidable force against other Code: Breakers and Re-Codes. She also seems to have a superior sense of smell, able to tell the real Yuuki from the fake by his smell, tell it's Ren in a costume, and even smell someone's personality.Sakura disagrees strongly with Ogami regarding his views on people, specifically criminals, and that they are trashes who need to die. It is later revealed that she is the daughter to the most respected head of the yakuza. After the fight with Haruto, she tells Rei that she was adopted by her parents when he tries to find albums of before she was 5. She was spared by Ogami because of her identity as a "rare kind". She cannot be affected by Ogami's flame at all and by hugging Kanda, she was able to cancel out Hitomi's electric mind control. She managed to completely reverse Yukihina's "Eternity Zero" although it used up all her power. Like the Code: Breakers, if she uses too much of her ability, she will revert to the size of a doll. Hitomi has hidden a key that the Re-Codes are looking for with "Puppy". After being kidnapped by "The one being Sought", she now has his tattoo on the back of her neck, something that greatly upsets Rei. She also remembers that she met "The one being Sought" back with she was a child and give the key to him, which means the key is originally Sakura's.

She later met Inoichi in chapter 65 and in 66 when Sakura was in danger, Sakura had a flashback, remembering she knows Inoichi and Inoichi had always protected her and always stayed by her side.It is highly suggested in the later part of the series that there is more to her and the world of the Codes that she is unaware of, where the Code: Breakers deliberately had her leave to go on a camping trip while they fought the Re-Codes at the Shibuya Mansion. It was also revealed in chapter 75, "he" said that the room where Pandora'a Box was being kept (beyond the door, only accessible with the card key) was exactly the same as it was when their mother died (Ogami and "the one being sought") and that her death was caused by Sakura and "the one being sought" also mention that Sakura's memories should be starting to come back.In chapter 76, it was said that Ogami's and "the one being sought"'s mother die because of protecting Sakura, during that time, Ogami, Inochi, and Hitomi was there with Sakura during that incident, meaning Oogami already met Sakura when they were younger. In Chapter 77 it is revealed that she her real father is the Student Council President. In previous chapters, he has also stated that Sakura must not realize that she herself is a Rare Kind, otherwise, she cannot return to a normal lifestyle. It was also stated that the Student Council President didn't want Sakura to become like himself, a non-existent person because of the power of the rare kind.In Chapter 111 it is revealed that sakuras real mother was one of the four founders of eden.In Chapters 112 onward, it appears as though Sakura unknowingly has gained a crush on Ogami. When he initiates a hug towards her for the first time to prove that he was still warm and alive, her entire face turns red. When asked, she states that it was the first time he hugged her, so she was surprised, but Ogami didn't understand why she was blushing. In Chapter 113, Sakura grabs his fingers, saying that they were warm and the Emperor should be alive. Ogami moves to hold her whole hand, and once again she inexplicably blushes and stutters.

Ogami, however, thinks that it is a 'feature of the rare kind' and thinks that he should do some more tests to examine her.IT was revealed that in chapter 122, when Sakura and Ogami are childhood friends and she was the one that took Ogami's arm, reasons are still not revealed yet.

Rei Ogami
The protagonist/antihero is a mysterious young boy about whom not much is known. His first appearance in the manga is when Sakura sees him in the park, and immediately becomes a transfer student at her school the next day. He wears a black glove on his left hand. His part time job is eliminating the "trash" of the people. He has so far eliminated a local gang called G-falcon who were attacking Sakurakouji and Dog, the local yakuza who controlled G-falcon, and a group of corrupt police officers, one of them vaguely knowing who the Code: Breakers are. He also apparently killed his own parents. His Code: Breaker codename is Code: 06, stating he is the weakest of the Code: Breakers.Ogami's left hand is capable of causing anything he touches (aside from Sakura) to combust into blue flames. However, in chapter 31 it is revealed that the ring around his thumb is a limiter, where when removed he no longer needs to touch to cause combustion and it is stated to surpass a Code: 01.

He covers it with a black leather glove when he doesn't use his power, where this glove was given to him by his brother, and wears it as a reminder to kill him. It is later revealed that his arm is not his own, explaining why his fire power only comes from his left arm and not his right. In chapter 102 it is stated that he had died once while he was younger, and that the left arm he has now acts as a heart for him because it governs life and death, without it he would die. The Lost for Rei after using his power for extended periods causes him to have a high fever along with a lower body temperature and, like all other Code: Breakers, won't be able to use his power again until exactly 24 hours have elapsed. After the resurrection of "Code: Emperor", however, his lost form changes into invisibility, lasing for less than 24 hours. Ogami's left arm is not his; in fact, it belongs to the Code: Emperor. He is supposed to eliminate any witnesses to his powers, but he cannot fulfill this in Sakura's case because he cannot cause her to combust. As the story progresses, Ogami grows fond of Sakura. He become protective of her but denies it by acting cold. This grows more evident where he was willing to put on a stupid costume under the belief it would help Sakura return to normal size and became completely disociated after Sakura was kidnapped by "The one being Sought" to where he didn't realize he came to school in his pajamas and brought canned food instead of his school books.Ogami believes strongly in the idea behind the Code of Hammurabi, often citing the quote "Eye for eye, Tooth for tooth and adding on "EVIL for EVIL " Ogami fulfills a role similar to an anti-hero.

Although he seems totally uncaring towards anyone, Sakura notes that his actions contradict his words and that he wouldn't go to such lengths if he didn't truly care. This is later shown where he has a complete uncaring attitude to Lily's mercenary's threats, only to react when he attempted to kill a pregnant woman. He also appears to have a hobby in swordsmanship and is quite skilled as well, able to slice through arrows while still in flight. He has completed studying under the student council president, strengthening his power and is currently heading to face the Re-Codes. On the fight with "The one being Sought" Oogami has memories of his life with "The one being Sought". Ogami ends up killing "The one being Sought",his brother, but had to be protected by Toki, Yuuki, and Sakura. This makes him stronger because he doesn't want his friends to get hurt for him. After defeating "The one being Sought" Ogami starts daydreaming and making models of castles. He starts staring into space as if regretting having killed his brother. He also gets a new power The Black Flame called Belphegor in chapter 104 which is strong enough to burn Yuuki's "Sound" but at a price. And his blue flame, "Satan's flame", also came at a price which was his sense of taste. In chapter 111 the emperor gives him an another power called the Mammon while fighting with heike. In chapter 121 it is revealed that he was the one that taught Sakura how to love living things, and was the one that made her to love hugging people. Special Technique: Flame away. He creates intensely hot blue flame that surrounds and burn the enemy.
